BYU North Campus Gyms — Optimal Walking Route

BYU's north campus — the Carillon tower, Smoot building, and museum lawns. Exact shortest walking order on real path-network distances (BRouter), solved with Held–Karp and confirmed by exhaustive brute force. Every gym within ~1 km is plotted in red for context — zoom out to see them all.

Loop or line? The loop returns to the start; start at any gym — numbering is anchored at Abraham O Smoot Building Sign for reference. The line runs Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum → Cannon Center and saves 452 m over the loop.

Verified. Every leg of this route was cross-checked against the mapped walking network — distances, gym snap points, and the optimized order all verified, and the long-looking detours are real obstacles (the fenced Administration Building construction site and the Museum of Art), not routing errors. Note that the Brigham Young statue currently sits inside the construction fence, so you spin it from the walkway south of the site, and the return leg crosses North Campus Drive on the spiral footbridge — budget the full posted time.

Origin. Found as rank #3 in the BYU-area route search: closed loops hitting 7+ gyms in a 30-minute walk, searched across a 3 km radius around campus.

Method. Distances are the per-pair minimum of BRouter's hiking-mountain and shortest profiles plus a metric-closure pass. Gym data: PokeScrapper capture through 2026-07-07. Buildings and paths: OpenStreetMap.
